When 19-year-old Mary Phelps Jacob invented the very first, makeshift modern brassière back in 1913 (using a pair of handkerchiefs and some ribbon), she would have had no idea of the political ramifications that it would take on in the 100 years since.
From Victorian-era corsets to the overly ostentatious, campy cone bra designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and worn by Madonna on her infamous Blond Ambition tour in 1990 – the journey taken by women’s supportive garments has been quite the wild ride. The bra has become emblematic of the woman’s body and how it may be restricted, concealed, or supported.
While “Free the Nipple” campaigns across the globe have rightly demanded the depoliticisation of women’s breasts in order for women to reclaim a sense of ownership over their own bodies, supportive garments still remain a necessity for the vast majority of ladies for day-to-day comfort.
As such, we’ve witnessed a trend towards minimalism and overall practicality in the world of lingerie. Don’t get us wrong, we all love the confidence-boosting power of a particularly sexy, lacy new bra and knickers combo. Yet, in our humble opinion, nothing feels quite as good as a sumptuously soft, skin-hugging wireless bra and some form-fitting cotton pants.
Indeed, Alexa Chung once said in a conversation with French actress and singer Josephine de la Baume, as they went through the Parisian’s lingerie drawer, “I’m happy with my five-pack of pants,” flashing a pair of white M&S multipack knickers as she spoke, “I think white cotton knickers are sexy.”
In true simple-is-sexy fashion, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best wireless bras for all-day comfort and support.
