Residents evacuated after grenade found on suburban street in Bristol

Residents have been evacuated after a grenade was found on a leafy suburban street in Bristol as bomb disposal experts were scrambled to the scene.

The grenade was found in the Bristol suburb of Fishponds on Monday morning.

The local Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team are now working to make the grenade safe.

Tents have been set up in a car park as emergency services work, the Bristol Post reported.

Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers are currently at Homefield Drive, in Fishponds, following a report of a suspected old grenade being discovered this morning.

"A small number of properties were evacuated as a precaution while officers awaited the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team - who are now at the scene."

There have been a number of cases across the UK in which unexploded ordnance, mainly from the Second World War, have been found.

In February bomb disposal officers safely detonated a huge bomb off the coast of Plymouth.

The bomb was found in a garden, triggering a huge evacuation. Experts then dealt with it safely at sea.
