Through The Datai Pledge, this Malaysian retreat intertwines luxury escapes with funding a foundation rooted in environmental and social impact

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

What do you get if you blend unbridled luxury with a 10 million-year-old biodiversity-rich rainforest? An extraordinary eco-luxury resort powering an impact-led foundation at the edge of the Andaman Sea.

Nestled among the trees and overlooking a vanilla-sand bay, The Datai Langkawi is cocooned in nature and works hard to preserve that environment.

This luxury retreat – located on the Malaysian island of Langkawi – is attracting the loyalty of a new generation of conscious explorers who demand excellence and time, with hosts actively pursuing positive impact.

Each one of the hotel’s 121 rooms, suites and villas immerses guests in the surrounding rainforest – from the blended hardwood architecture to low-environmental-impact design.

Every guest experience is centred in nature and community – from the expert naturalists and marine biologists who offer talks at the onsite Nature Centre and guided tours of the rainforest-lined coastline, to hands-on workshops with local artisans at The Lab.

Arnaud Girodon, executive administrator of The Datai Pledge and chief executive officer of Datai Hotels and Resorts, is one of the passionate trailblazers who drives the benchmark behind-the-scenes impact.

“The Datai Pledge is a consistently evolving sustainability and conservation trust and one we are committed to developing to further support the wildlife, environment and communities of Langkawi,” he says.

“As the programme grows, we look to support additional initiatives, NGOs and social enterprises, creating new and developing existing partnerships, including those that initiate and enhance self-sustaining communities.”

The Datai Pledge – the resort’s comprehensive sustainability and conservation programme – works with local non-governmental organisations, social enterprises and communities to support regeneration in surrounding social and environmental settings.

Its four pillars – Pure For The Future, Fish For The Future, Wildlife For The Future and Youth For The Future – strive to reduce environmental impact, empower local communities and restore surrounding landscapes and marine environments.

It is this understanding that environmental conservation and community empowerment go hand-in-hand with human welfare that’s central to the hotel’s ethos.

“Creating self-sustaining communities that conserve and sustain natural resources is at the heart of what we do, and we are committed to helping them thrive, particularly the underprivileged, to gain financial independence through sustainable means,” says Girodon.

Empowering and working with the local community

By partnering with local producers, investing in artists and craftmakers and sponsoring upskilling projects, the resort helps empower underprivileged communities to be self-sustainable.

“The Datai Pledge’s activities include upcycling the resort’s candles with the local community, sustainably harvesting organic honey from stingless bees, producing extra virgin coconut oil and collaborating with local producers and artisans who work with sustainable wood, and more,” says Girodon.

Guests can get involved, too, at The Lab: the resort’s unique activity centre, where an art studio meets a permaculture garden.

In addition to revealing the secrets to recycling success and the resort’s journey towards zero-to-landfill success, guests can directly support and get involved in this valuable work, through artisan-led workshops and beekeeping classes, as well as local craft products available for purchase.

“None of the positive impact The Datai Pledge has on Langkawi’s communities and environment would be possible without the unwavering support of our guests, for which we are eternally grateful,” continues Girodon.

Improving the well-being of Langkawi

Contributions to The Datai Pledge go towards vital community spaces for underserved youth and other community segments of Langkawi.

Girodon stresses how these programmes are a priority for the resort: “Strengthening The Datai Pledge’s collaborations with the local community on financial, training and material assistance, and environmental awareness with grassroots projects such as Geng Bersih Kampung [Clean Kampung Gang in Malay] and social enterprise partner The Kanshalife Project, are ongoing priorities for both The Datai Langkawi and The Datai Pledge.”

Through The Datai Pledge projects, the resort unites individuals, communities and organisations in one single purpose: to improve the well-being of the environment, wildlife, and community of Langkawi, ensuring the preservation of its treasures for future generations to cherish.

A long-running partnership with local NGO Geng Bersih Kampung helps build self-confidence in local youth through heritage-based activities such as language development, the traditional Malaysian martial art of silat and a deepening understanding of local flora and fauna.

While The Kanshalife Project is a transformative social enterprise that brings people together in a safe, nature-hugged space where they can build friendships and sustainable income through creativity and art projects – teaching locals how to transform waste into sellable artistic creations.

Meanwhile, instilling the importance of conservation practices from an early age starts with the inspiring Kedah Eco-Schools programme – a collaboration with local NGO, Green Growth Asia Foundation.

The Datai Langkawi sponsors three Langkawi schools to partake in the Eco-Schools programme, giving students the opportunity to learn about sustainability and conservation as a part of the curriculum. This project, says Girodon, “educates pupils on environmental issues and empowers them with the tools to make positive change and incorporate additional extracurricular education programmes”.

Capturing The Datai Pledge projects on film

The Datai Langkawi has launched a series of engaging films celebrating the work of its community support programme under The Datai Pledge.

These films demonstrate how creating a dialogue between different collaborators and members of the wider community can have exceptional impact. They also immerse viewers in the efforts to educate and improve the well-being of Langkawi’s youth, the underprivileged, and its wildlife and environment, with support from The Datai Pledge.
